Highway 82 Pedestrian Crossing

Working for Pitkin County, Clauson Rawley Associates assisted Parsons Transportation Group to provide extensive public outreach and site design services to develop a safe grade-separated pedestrian crossing across six-lane State Highway 82 between the Aspen Airport and the Airport Business Center. Intensive stakeholder meetings, a community open house, web-based surveys, and a design charrette were held to solicit public input on the preferred method and location for a safe and comfortable grade-separated pedestrian crossing of this major arterial roadway.

The effort integrated several concurrent planning efforts: the Aspen Area Community Plan, the State Highway 82 Access Control Plan, the development of Roaring Fork Transit Authority Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, and the Aspen/Pitkin County Airport Master Plan. The preferred crossing alternative, which connects two new BRT stops, was completed in 2016 and supports the Colorado Department of Transportation goal of enhancing pedestrian safety and mobility in this major highway corridor.
