Aspen Core Building

The Aspen Core Project received final approval from the City of Aspen in 2012 and was completed in 2014. The project consists of a new three-story mixed-use structure and two renovated historic buildings. The new building occupies a former surface parking lot that had become a poster site for needed redevelopment in Aspen's commercial core. The project also integrates existing mid-century designated historic structures consisting of the studio building constructed by the late Thomas Benton, a well-known local artist, and a locals' favorite restaurant, now flagged as Clark's Oyster Bar. Enhanced public amenities will bring greater pedestrian traffic from the Aspen Mall to the Aspen Art Museum along this desirable street. The Benton Building restoration won a 2016 award from the City of Aspen Historic Preservation Commission. 

CRA assisted the client in navigating the AspenModern negotiations process, a preservation program recently implemented by the city for post-WW II structures, and assisted in crafting a final approval. The streetscape design by CRA includes Silva Cell technology to enhance the viability of street trees and a specially-designed plaza reflecting the art of Thomas Benton.
