Aspen Alps - Landscape Architecture

Aspen Alps

Adjacent to the ski slopes, the Aspen Alps Condominiums is a substantial complex of condominium structures constructed in the 1960s and 1970s. These buildings offer extraordinary views and recreational access, but have become quite dated both in architecture and lack of complementary site design. Owing to steep slopes and encroaching vegetation, erosion and wildfire safety have become more significant issues over the years. In the summer of 2002, CRA was hired to provide design solutions for two of the building sites in order to provide enhanced integration with the landscape, screening, and parking amenities. While some aspects of the architecture could not easily be changed, the relationship of the structures to the landscape could be considerably improved. We provided two of the buildings with design work intended to enhance parking and entry design, introduce native species and landscape forms that complemented and softened the architecture, and address safety and erosion control issues.
